Up to one in four mothers suffers from postpartum depression in the United States, and the cultural myth of the "good mother," who can do it all, may contribute to the stress and anxiety a lot of mothers feel.
MotherWoman, Inc., an Amherst-based non-profit organization celebrating its 10th anniversary, is working to empower women through support, the creation of strong communities and changing laws and policies that relate to mothers and families.
The Amherst-based nonprofit, which is having its annual fund-raising breakfast on Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Northampton, offers three program areas to support its mission: a mothers' support group that focuses on the women, not the children; a postpartum support initiative and the group's political arm, which works to improve laws and policies that relate to mothers and families.
